Domestic Violence Awareness & Safety Tips

Shielding Lives is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization committed to addressing domestic violence, which poses significant risks to individual and community well-being. The repercussions of such violence are far-reaching, often inflicting lasting physical, psychological, and emotional damage on survivors. Alarmingly, children raised in environments marred by domestic abuse are at heightened risk of becoming either victims or perpetrators themselves in later life.
Mission Statement of Shielding Lives, Inc.
At Shielding Lives, Inc., our dedication extends beyond immediate support to empowering survivors of domestic violence with both practical aid and crucial information. We complement the essential services provided by other organizations—such as survivor counseling, emergency shelters, relocation services, and vocational training—with our unique approach to immediate, tangible support. Our Survivor Gift Card Program is at the heart of our mission to help alleviate the burden of basic needs for eligible individuals and families during their most challenging times. These gift cards empower survivors, enabling them to secure necessities, thus fostering independence and dignity in their journey toward recovery.
In our commitment to support and educate, we leverage the power of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Through our public service announcements, we aim to raise awareness about the dangers of domestic violence and provide a beacon of hope and knowledge. We disseminate information about the various services available to survivors, thus broadening our impact and reinforcing our role as a vital component of the support network for those affected by domestic violence.
Shielding Lives, Inc.'s mission is fueled by collaboration, compassion, and the generous contributions of our community. We strive to strengthen the safety net for survivors and advocate for a world free from domestic violence.
Advocates and counselors should always document domestic violence strangulation cases regardless of whether or not the victim is desirous of prosecution. Strangulation is a marker for intimate partner homicides. Contact us for a PDF version of the supplemental report, and we will gladly send it to you.
Our organization strives to empower domestic violence victims. We provide educational resources to help victims access the assistance they need and emergency aid for urgent necessities through our Walmart Emergency Gift Card Program. We believe everyone deserves the chance to live a better life, and we work tirelessly to make that happen. Join us in our mission to make a difference!

No one likes talking about domestic violence, but it's a conversation we can't avoid. Ignoring the problem leaves victims stuck in a cycle of abuse, and educating the community about the real dangers of ongoing physical violence is a challenge. That's where Shielding Lives, Inc. and Just Tactics LLC step in. Together, we've developed a hands-on approach to education through self-defense and workplace violence workshops, with a special focus on strangulation—a common, often deadly tactic in sexual assaults and domestic violence cases.
Alex Smith, founder of Shielding Lives, knows firsthand that offering free community self-defense workshops gets people to engage, primarily when the workshop is on life-or-death topics like strangulation. These workshops teach practical skills and raise awareness about how often strangulation appears in sexual assaults and intimate partner violence.
Domestic violence doesn't stop at the front door—it follows victims into the workplace. It affects job performance, can lead to job loss, and, in the worst cases, workplace violence. Alex has seen that talking to employers and employees about how domestic violence spills into the workplace opens doors to deeper discussions. These talks also highlight the services available to help survivors.
Shielding Lives is looking for individuals and organizations willing to partner with us. Together, we can sponsor workshops that educate, empower, and, most importantly, help people spot the warning signs of dangerous relationships. Our mission is simple: save lives by giving people the tools and knowledge to protect themselves and find help before it's too late.

NO. The person needing a gift card must be a recent survivor of domestic violence who is not already receiving government financial assistance, and they must be referred to us directly by a domestic violence advocate/counselor working in the State of Florida.
Survivors could receive as little as $50 and as much as $300 in a Walmart Gift Card, depending on their circumstances and the availability of funds in the EGC Program.
The Emergency Gift Card (EGC) Program is a one-time distribution. The gift card is intended to assist the survivor with obtaining needed necessities after leaving their abuser. This program is for survivors working with an advocate/counselor to end the circle of violence and become self-sufficient.
We issue gift cards directly to survivors. The most common method is E-Gift cards, which can be emailed or texted to the survivor. This requires the survivor to work closely with an advocate or counselor.
